STIs on the Rise Across Europe

Recent data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) highlights a worrying increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) across Europe (29 EU/EEA countries).

In 2023, European countries reported nearly 100,000 confirmed cases of gonorrhea, marking a 31% rise from 2022 and an alarming increase of over 300% compared to 2014. Syphilis cases also continued to grow, with 41,051 confirmed cases in 2023- 13% more than in 2022 and twice as many as in 2014.

Although the rise in chlamydia cases slowed in 2023, it remains the most frequently reported bacterial STI in Europe. With over 230,000 cases recorded that year, the number has increased by 13% since 2014.

Beyond the growing number of STI cases, the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in gonorrhea is particularly concerning. The emergence of drug-resistant strains endangers current treatment options, highlighting the urgency of preventive measures and responsible antibiotic use.

Several factors may explain this surge in STI cases. Increased testing could be one reason, while other possibilities, such as changes in sexual behaviors, including reduced use of protection and a greater number of sexual partners, require further investigation.

These findings underscore a significant rise in syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, emphasizing the need for greater awareness, improved diagnostic tools, and timely interventions. Immediate action is essential to curb transmission and minimize the public health impact of STIs.

Common Sexually Transmitted Infections and Pathogens

Chlamydia

Chlamydia, caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, is one of the most reported STIs in Europe. Often asymptomatic, it can lead to serious reproductive health complications, including infertility, if left untreated.

Gonorrhoea

Caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, gonorrhoea has seen a dramatic rise in cases. It can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat, and antibiotic-resistant strains are becoming a significant concern.

Syphilis

Treponema pallidum is responsible for syphilis, a disease that progresses in stages. If undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to severe complications, including neurological and cardiovascular issues. Congenital syphilis occurs when syphilis is transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy.

Trichomoniasis

This infection, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, often presents with mild or no symptoms but can lead to complications such as increased susceptibility to other STIs.

The Role of Real-Time PCR in STI Diagnosis

Early and precise diagnosis is essential to managing and controlling the spread of STIs. Real-Time PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) technology offers high sensitivity and specificity, enabling the detection of even low levels of pathogenic DNA.

Anatolia provides advanced molecular diagnostic solutions with its Bosphore Real-Time PCR kits against STI causing pathogens. Bosphore STDs Panel Kits can facilitate the rapid and accurate detection of the most common pathogens in one test, ensuring effective infection management

With the increasing burden of STIs, reliable molecular diagnostic tools like Real-Time PCR are critical for effective disease management and prevention. Anatolia remains committed to providing cutting-edge solutions to support healthcare professionals in the fight against STIs.
